Open Security Exchange Initiates Project With
The Security Industry Association To Create New Standards
Names Steve Hunt, Forrester Research Inc and Sandra
Jones, Sandra Jones Consulting To OSE’s Advisory Board
Announces Newest Members and Expanded Workgroups
October 2, 2003—Washington, D.C. The
National Summit On Security —The Open Security Exchange (OSE), a
program of IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (ISTO)
promoting the integration between disparate components of security
infrastructure, today announced that it has submitted a New Project
Proposal to the Security Industry Association’s (SIA) Standards
Committee for the purpose of defining testing criteria for OSE’s
interoperability specifications for physical and cyber security
technologies. SIA, the world-leading trade association for
manufacturers and service providers of physical security technologies
and applications, has accepted as a working document, the OSE’s
Physical Security Bridge to IT Security Specification (PHYSBITS) to
promote organizational and technical integration between physical and
IT systems.
Additionally, OSE announced new members, the expansion of its
management board, and the creation of new workgroups.
Comprised of more than 600 member companies, SIA is an ANSI (American
National Standards Institute) accredited standards development
organization. SIA ‘s Open Systems Integration and Performance Standards
Initiative (OSIPS) will produce a series of American National Standards
for Security Systems Integration and Security Equipment Performance
standards. SIA ‘s OSIPS program is the result of the joint efforts
between SIA and the Department of State and the Department of Defense
controlled Counter Terrorism Technical Support Office’s Technical
Support Working Group (TSWG). It is anticipated that the standards
proposed by OSE will become a part of SIA’s strategic plan for OSIPS.
The PHYSBITS workgroup, chaired by Piers McMahon, chair of OSE’s
technical committee, will support SIA’s OSIPS effort by initially
creating testing criteria for physical and IT security systems
communications.
“OSE’s efforts are aligned with the objectives of OSIPS,” said Hunter
Knight, chair of SIA Standards Committee, “OSE brings a unique
contribution with PHYSBITS and the combined expertise of its members.”
“The submission of the PHYSBITS specifications to SIA is consistent
with the OSE mission of promoting open standards across the physical
and cyber security industry”, says Eric Maurice, Chairman and Executive
Director of the Open Security Exchange, “We hope that this combined
effort will trigger further industry collaboration for the security of
end-users worldwide.”
The OSE also announced its newest members ActivCard, Core Street, Fargo
Electronics, Siemens SBT, and VistaScape.
“The addition of new members is a critical priority for the Open
Security Exchange,” says Laurie Aaron, vice chairman of the Open
Security Exchange. “We applaud the customer focus and innovative drive
that our new members have shown by joining the Exchange.”
The OSE also announced the extension of its management board naming
Steve Hunt, Research Director, Forrester Research Inc and Sandy Jones,
Principal, Sandra Jones & Co. as advisory members. The advisory
board to the OSE will play a leading role in defining the future of the
organization and insuring its neutrality.
The Open Security Exchange also announces its intention to create new
workgroups to expand the scope of technology issues addressed by the
organization. These new workgroups include:
- The subcommittee for Security Data on Network
Storage, tasked with creating specifications and guidelines regarding
storage of security data on the corporate network, including
specifications regarding metadata information.
- The subcommittee for Credential Issuance and
Provisioning Best Practices, tasked with creating a white paper about
best practice issuance of cyber and physical credentials.
- The subcommittee for Smart Card Interoperability,
tasked with creating an engineering document that will comment on
current (ISO) standards to ensure common interpretation of the
specifications related to smart card hardware (cards and readers).
Leveraging the diverse expertise of its members, the OSE continues to
seek the role of security advisor to organizations worldwide. It
provides subject-matter expertise in the area of security management to
law enforcement agencies, government and commercial organizations,
educational and professional organizations.
